The Wetlands of the Americas Expansion – Make an Impact!

The uniquely designed elevated walkway that runs throughout The Wetlands of the Americas exhibit provides prime viewing of four species, offers shade on warm days, acts as an outdoor classroom for school children and is a critical element to learning about the Zoo’s endangered whooping cranes and American alligator. The Wetlands of the Americas expansion includes extending the current elevated walkway by an additional 240 feet along the lake wall. With the expansion of the elevated walkway, the current whooping crane habitat will grow by 35% offering new opportunities to ‘howdy’ the Zoo’s whooping cranes and is the first step towards being to participate in a future whooping crane breeding program and increasing educational opportunities that showcase the important whooping crane conservation story.

Expanding this critical element will not only offer each visitor stunning lake views and have a transformational impact on the whooping crane habitat, it will allow year-round viewing of Albert, and increase accessibility to each of these animals.

Your gift on Abilene Gives Day will support the expansion of this vital walkway creating a lasting impact on the endangered whooping crane, our beloved Albert the alligator and each visitor to the Abilene Zoo.
